Belarus: AtomStroyExport to build country’s first nuclear power plant

Following an earlier launched tender by Belarus, the Russian Rosatom subsidiary, AtomStroyExport (ASE) was selected to start the construction of a two-unit nuclear power plant at Ostrovetsk in the Grodno region by the end of 2013. This will be the first nuclear power plant in Belarus.

The deputy energy minister Mikhail Mikhadyuk established the terms of the general contract, which outlines the obligations and tasks of both the supplier and the customer, the timing of the project, its approximated cost until 2020, payment conditions, and the delivery of equipment and organization of construction. Mikhadyuk said that the construction of nuclear plant will allow Belarus to replace around 5 billion cubic metres of imported natural gas annually, as well as to cut the cost of electricity, slash carbon dioxide emissions by about 10.7 million.

The tender was attended by Rosatom, Areva and Westing-house Toshiba. ASE was the only bidder willing to finance the construction of the plant following the terms of the general contract.
