Bulgaria to build a new nuclear unit by 2022

Bulgarian government has decided to build a new unit at the nuclear power plant in the Danube town of Kozloduy, by installing a 1000 MW reactor, produced by Russian contractor Atomstroyexport, at the nuclear plant in Kozloduy.

According to NPP CEO Valentin Nikolov, the construction of the future Unit 7 of the only Bulgarian nuclear power plant in the Danube town of Kozloduy should be completed in 2022, but he said that everything depends on talks with Russia regarding the specific nuclear reactor. He also announced that five companies have applied to conduct the make inquiries for the construction of a seventh reactor, and one of them will be selected in these days.

By now, only the 1000 MW units 5 and 6 are operational, after Bulgaria agreed to shut down 440 MW units 1-4 in 2002 and 2006 respectively, but the Bulgarian government has also initiated a program to extend the life of units 5 and 6 by almost 20 years as their life is set to expire in 2017 and 2019, respectively.
