Pat Rabbitte, the Minister for Communications, Energy and Natural Resources, has announced on this week that the Government has approved his proposal to institute an Energy Efficiency Fund (EEF). The €35 million fund will lend cash to the public and commercial sectors for energy efficiency projects. The Irish Government expects the cash will be matched by the private sector to make a total of €70 million which will be accessible to interested businesses.

European Union’s 27 Commissioners will meet today to discuss 2030 climate and energy legislation. Today they will consider early proposals for 2030 climate targets covering CO2 emissions and possibly renewable, but the energy efficiency is excluded from the list.

The EU is presently committed to reduce emissions 20% by 2020, but the European Commission President Jose Manual Barroso, declared this would be not enough to prevent dangerous levels of global warming. Barroso added that green growth is a path out of the five-year-old Eurozone crisis, saying that 4.8 million new jobs could be created if the EU meets its 2020 energy efficiency targets. Meanwhile, the EU has started talking about setting climate and energy targets for 2030.

Gazprom, the world's biggest gas producer, has announced on Friday that it has set aside 3.5 billion euro for retroactive price concessions to major European customers in 2013. That comes as a reaction to the declining demand because of the Europe’s economic crisis, energy efficiency drives and competition from liquefied natural gas.
