Daily energy Overview, Thursday, May 19, 2011 Oil prices surged on Wednesday after the weekly U.S. Energy Information Administration report indicated a drop in crude stocks and on an increase across commodities markets. U.S. crude for delivery in June traded at 100.10 a barrel, lifting 3.19 dollars, after a trading range from 97.46 and 100.99 dollars. Meanwhile, ICE Brent crude for July delivery settled at 112.30 dollars a barrel, up 2.31 dollars, after a trading range between 110.42 and 113.10 dollars.

U.S. crude oil futures traded higher in the post-settlement trading on Tuesday after API released data indicating a decrease in gasoline and distillates stockpiles last week disregarding forecasts for an increase of inventory levels. By 20:35 GMT, U.S. crude for June delivery settled at 97.38 dollars a barrel, up 11 cents.

According to a report by China Daily newspaper, China may face the biggest power shortage since 2004 this summer estimated to about 30 million kilowatts as the electricity consumption expanded very fast in recent years, along with the country’s economic boom with demand this year expected to increase of about 12 percent from last year to 4.7 trillion KW.

U.S. crude oil futures ended lower on Monday pressured by gasoline futures that shed below 3 dollars a gallon for the first time since mid-March. U.S. crude for June delivery traded at 97.37 dollars a barrel, down 2.28 dollars, after a trading range between 96.90 and 99.65 dollars. Meanwhile, ICE Brent crude for delivery in June settled at 112.73 dollars, down 1.10 dollars, after a trading range from 112.00 and 114.00 dollars.
