UK’s coal-fired power plants to come off the grid in less than 10 years

Energy supplier RWE npower has announced it intends to avoid costly retrofits required by European Union pollution laws on seven of its power plants in UK, meaning they will close by the end of 2023 at the latest. The EU Industrial Emissions Directive (IED) should come into effect in 2016, imposing limits on emissions of climate-harming gases.

UK: The Big Six energy firms increased their profits five fold

According to informations from Ofgem, UK’s energy regulator, the Big Six energy suppliers saw their profit margins in the supply of gas and electricity increase to 4.3% in 2012, in comparison to 2.8% a year before. The big six operators made £53 profit per household customer last year, compared to £30 in 2011.

Spain envisages 2.7 billion euro cuts in subsidies

Spain's government intends to cut subsidies for renewable-energy suppliers and increase electricity bills as part of widespread reforms to its energy policy. The government had announced a series of actions intended at reducing the country’s tariff deficit, which amount to more than 26 billion euro, and has been accumulated as a result of a discrepancy between generating costs and electricity prices for consumers for a long period.
