Daily: European power prices up on lower nuclear production

Brent futures recovered from a $2 drop early in the day, rising 35 cents to settle at $114.36 per barrel while the U.S. crude oil prices decreased 83 cents to trade at $106.82 per barrel at 1PM EST, the end of a thinly traded, holiday-shortened day. It had dropped as low as $104.21.

Coal future in Europe

Because of the current low prices of coal and carbon allowances, coal has revived as an economically interesting input for power generation in Europe. The economic advantage of coal over natural gas poses major questions for the already troubled gas fired power plants, meanwhile the EU wants to see a shift from coal-fired power generation towards renewables and gas, which are emitting less greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere than power generated from coal.

China to offer more subsidies for renewable energy

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) said that China will increase subsidies for cleaner forms of electricity from Sept. 25, in a move that aims to help thermal power plants meet the country's tough new air pollution standards.

Daily: European power down on a major wind power generation

Brent crude oil chopped down because of unbalanced trade on Friday, ahead of a long weekend in the United States. Brent crude for October decreased $1.12 to $114.04 per barrel by 18:16 GMT after previously reaching a low of $113.63 prior to Kerry's speech. U.S. crude for October delivery fell $1.22 to $107.58 after hitting a low of $106.75.

Vattenfall submitted plans for a new wind farm in Scotland

Swedish energy company Vattenfall has presented plans for the construction of a new wind farm on the south west of Scotland. The South Kyle Wind Farm would have about 50 turbines and a capacity of more than 170 MW, which should be enough to meet the annual electricity power demand of more than 90,000 households. It is expected that it will cost more than £190 million to build the wind farm.
