Turkey to start construction of its first nuclear power plant in 2014

Stating to the Director General of Akkuyu NGS A.S. Alexander Superfin, the construction of the first nuclear power plant Akkuyu in Turkey will start in early 2014. The preparation of an ecological report on the project’s impact on the environment will be completed in May 2013.

China installed almost 16 GW of wind power in 2012

According to data offered by Bloomberg New Energy Finance, in 2012, China was the world’s largest wind market in terms of annual installed capacity. The country installed 15.9GW of onshore turbines, or about 35% of the world’s new onshore capacity.

EDF Energies Nouvelles to acquire the wind energy portfolio of Séchilienne Sidec in France

EDF Energies Nouvelles (EDF EN) has bought the wind energy portfolio for a total of 56.5MW from the independent energy producer Séchilienne-Sidec. The deal is part of Sechilienne- Sidec’s drive to focus on biomass and solar power generation. The achievement is part of EDF's goal to further develop its business while consolidating its presence in France.

Global PV capacity surpassed 100 GW in 2012

According to preliminary data collected by the European Photovoltaic Industry Association (EPIA), global installed PV capacity reached 100GW in 2012 for the first time, up from 71GW in 2011 and 40GW in 2010. The world’s solar capacity can now produce as much electricity in a year as 16 coal power plants or nuclear reactors of 1 GW each.
