Poland wants to reduce its dependence on highly polluting coal and expensive Russian gas imports, so it is working hard on its program for introducing nuclear power in its energy mix. At present it is highly dependent on coal, which provides around 90% of the country’s energy.

According to Italian energy agency Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE), last month Italy added 170 MW of new PV capacity. This compares to about 214 MW registered in March and 126 MW for February. The GSE states this brings Italy’s total solar PV installed capacity to 16.9GW.

A European consortium composed from eleven top companies have established the North Sea Power to Gas Platform, to jointly develop the concept of Power-to-Gas (P2G) – the conversion of renewable electrical power into a gaseous energy carrier like hydrogen or methane.

Russian energy giant Gazprom, the world’s biggest natural gas producer, reported a 10% drop in its earnings amid lower gas sales. Profits for 2012 amounted to 38.17 billion dollars, compared to 42.2 billion dollars in 2011.
