AES Bulgaria, a unit of U.S.-based energy conglomerate AES Corporation, said on Tuesday that its thermal power plant (TPP) AES Galabovo and the Saint Nikola Wind Farm have produced some 415,000 MWh of electricity since March 13 when a countrywide state of emergency was declared due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This output volume would be enough to service the average monthly power consumption of 1.5 million households in Bulgaria, the company said in a statement.

The two units are observing strict health protection measures, AES Bulgaria noted, adding that it has already provided PCR test kits for its employees at the TPP and the wind farm. AES Bulgaria is repared to isolate part of its employees in special compartments within the premises of its units, if the coronavirus crisis aggravates, it added.

The Saint Nikola Wind Farm located near the town of Kavarna, on the Black Sea coast, consists of 52 turbines of 3 MW each. It was built in 2009 and commenced operations in 2010. The wind farm is operated by AES Geo Energy, which is majority-owned by AES Bulgaria.

In 1999, a unit of U.S.-based energy conglomerate AES Corporation purchased the majority interest in Bulgaria's Maritsa East 1 project, subsequently renamed AES Galabovo in 2009. AES completed the full acquisition of the 600 MW thermal power plant from Ireland's Consolidated Continental Commerce Limited (3C) in 2005.
