European coal prices fell to near four-year lows in early Monday trading as plunging oil prices exacerbated existing pressure from a weak gas market, sluggish demand and ample supply.

The API 2 front-quarter contract traded down USD 0.87 on Friday’s close at a USD 47.55/t, while the Cal 21 was USD 1.84 lower at USD 54.70/t, on Ice Futures.

The contracts earlier hit their lowest on a rolling basis since May and June 2016, respectively, of USD 46.75/t and USD 53.75/t.
