Masdar-led team agrees to PPA for 1-GW wind project in Kazakhstan

UAE-based renewable energy developer Masdar has secured a power purchase agreement (PPA) to supply electricity from its planned 1-GW wind farm in Kazakhstan's Jambyl region. The agreement was made with the Financial Settlement Centre for Renewable Energy Sources Support LLP, a government-owned organization in Kazakhstan, during the COP29 climate conference in Baku. Masdar is leading the project in collaboration with W Solar, Qazaq Green Power, and the Kazakhstan Investment Development Fund (KIDF). This announcement follows a recent investment agreement for the project with the Ministry of Energy of Kazakhstan. Construction of the wind farm is expected to start by the first quarter of 2026, and the facility will provide power to approximately 300,000 homes annually upon completion. It will also include a battery energy storage system (BESS) with a capacity of 600 MWh. This wind park will mark Masdar's first project in Kazakhstan and is anticipated to be one of the largest wind farms in the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS) region.
