EDF launches a fixed tariff that is cheaper than the January price cap.

EDF has launched Simply Fixed Direct 1y Jan26, claiming to be the most affordable 12-month fixed tariff among major energy providers, priced at £1,608 per year for an average user. This offer is £130 less than Ofgem’s price cap set for January 2025. Energy costs have risen since October due to seasonal demand, colder weather, and geopolitical tensions, including conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East. EDF predicts that the price cap may rise again in April, but changes in wholesale prices could impact these forecasts. The tariff does not require a smart meter, has no exit fees, and can be obtained directly from EDF. However, it might be discontinued if global energy prices stay unstable.
