Serbia is looking to boost the amount of gas it receives from Russia through a new agreement that is currently being negotiated with Gazprom, according to Russian media reports.
"We are requesting an increase [in supplies]," Serbia's deputy prime minister Aleksandar Vulin told reporters at the Verona Eurasian Economic Forum in the United Arab Emirates on Friday, as cited by the Russian news agency TASS.
Vulin mentioned that gas supplies from Russia have already increased this winter. "After that, we will have a new agreement. I do not anticipate any issues," he stated.
Vulin's office had not responded to a request for comment from SeeNews by the time this article was published.
Last month, Serbia's minister responsible for international economic cooperation, Nenad Popovic, indicated that Serbia expects to finalize a new gas agreement with Russia next spring "on the same or better terms," according to Tanjug news agency.
In 2022, Serbia entered into a three-year contract with Gazprom for the delivery of 2.2 billion cubic meters (bcm) of gas per year, as reported by the media at that time.
Dusan Bajatovic, head of Srbijagas, Serbia's state-owned natural gas importer and distributor, stated in October that the country had arranged for additional gas supplies from Gazprom for the winter season. Bajatovic also mentioned that he anticipates Russian gas supplies to reach 400 million cubic meters this winter.
In 2023, Gazprom supplied Serbia with 2.68 bcm of gas, according to Bajatovic.
