Axpo and its partners have initiated the construction of a 2-MW green hydrogen facility in Switzerland.

Swiss energy trader and renewable energy company Axpo Holding AG has commenced the construction of its second green hydrogen production facility in Switzerland, as announced by the company on Friday.

Axpo and its collaborators held a groundbreaking ceremony for the 2-MW initiative in Buerglen, located in central Switzerland. The plant will be managed by H2Uri, a firm that is a joint venture between Axpo and partners including energy companies Schaetzle AG, EWA-Energie Uri, and the tourism and shipping firm SGV Holding AG.

The facility is anticipated to start operations in 2026. It will utilize green electricity from the nearby EWA-Energie Uri hydropower station to generate up to 260 tonnes of green hydrogen each year, according to Axpo.

This hydrogen will be utilized to fuel the passenger vessel Saphir on Lake Lucerne, along with other uses, such as supplying a hydrogen refuelling station that is managed by Schaetzle.

Axpo also mentioned that the construction of its intended green hydrogen production plant in Wildegg-Brugg is proceeding as planned, with construction expected to kick off in spring 2025 following an initial delay in securing a building permit.

Earlier this year, Axpo, in collaboration with utility Rhiienergie AG, launched its first green hydrogen facility, a 2.5-MW plant located in Switzerland's Graubunden Canton.
