Low carbon backup power is on its way to Manchester, with plans for a large battery storage project.
Carlton Power and Statera Energy have formed an agreement for Statera Energy to obtain the rights to develop a 680MW battery energy storage system (BESS) at the Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park in South West Manchester.
The 12-hectare Trafford Low Carbon Energy Park is a site that was previously used as the Carrington coal-fired power station until 1991.
Currently, the site hosts a flexible gas-fired power station and has a deal in place for Highview Power to develop a £300 million liquid air energy storage (LAES) project.
In 2023, Carlton Power received planning approval for the potential development of approximately 2GW of BESS capacity and a green hydrogen production facility with a capacity of up to 200MW on the premises.
The initial phase of the Trafford Green Hydrogen facility, a 15MW project, has received a financial support contract from the Department for Energy Security & Net Zero and is expected to start operations within the next two years.
