Statkraft receives approval for UK solar power project

Statkraft has obtained planning approval for the Kitland Solar Farm situated north of Langford in North Somerset.

The developer stated that the 39.9MW project site was deliberately selected for its capacity to supply renewable electricity to the grid, aiding in the achievement of both national and local renewable energy goals.

To enhance the renewable energy possibilities of the project, the approved plans also encompass a battery energy storage system (BESS), which captures electricity and redistributes it to the energy network during peak demand periods.

In early 2024, Statkraft held both online and in-person public consultation events, considering community feedback prior to submitting an application to North Somerset Council in May 2024.

Furthermore, through the planting of wildflower meadows and hedgerows, the site aims to achieve about 94% biodiversity net gain for habitats, as outlined in the plans.

The network of pathways will be expanded with over 3.5km of new public rights of way within the site, and an orchard will be planted in the eastern field near Wrington for the community's enjoyment.

Statkraft also intends to support the local business sector by collaborating with nearby suppliers during both the construction and operational phases of the project.

Kitland Solar Farm will provide annual Community Benefit Funding throughout its 40-year operational lifespan, which is projected to exceed £600,000 over the project's duration.

Construction is anticipated to commence in 2027.

Mark Henderson, Statkraft’s senior solar project manager, stated: "We are thrilled that our plans for a new solar farm at Kitland have received approval from North Somerset Council.

"Kitland Solar Farm has the capability to power approximately 13,000 homes, aiding the UK in its transition to a net zero future while also offering local advantages such as enhancing wildlife and creating new walking paths and community spaces.

"I would like to express my gratitude to everyone who participated in the planning process. We are dedicated to being a good neighbor throughout the project's duration and look forward to ongoing collaboration with the local community."
