Serbia's EDS and NITES have entered into an agreement for a smart metering project supported by the EBRD.

Elektrodistribucija Srbije (EDS), the Serbian state-owned power distribution company, has entered into a contract worth 8.53 million euros ($9.24 million) for an Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI) system with the local company NITES. This agreement is part of a smart metering expansion project that is being funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), according to a statement from the lender.

As part of the contract, NITES will supply IT infrastructure and security (both hardware and software), concentrators, metering devices for medium and low voltage (MV and LV) customers, as well as oversee the installation and integration of the IT environment and on-site installation of metering devices in distribution areas located in Kraljevo, Cacak in central Serbia, and Nis in the east of the country, the EBRD noted in its announcement on Thursday.

The contract is expected to be completed by February 28, 2027.

The initiative is backed by a 40 million euro loan provided by the EBRD to EDS in late 2021, which is aimed at financing the deployment of smart metering infrastructure.

NITES, based in Belgrade, was founded in November 2003 and is wholly owned by NITES Group Limited. While NITES Group was originally established in the Czech Republic, its headquarters are located in the UK. NITES Group specializes in producing, developing, and integrating IT solutions for the telecommunications, utilities, and government sectors. In addition to Serbia and the Czech Republic, the company has subsidiaries in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, and Montenegro, and operates a joint venture in Kazakhstan, managing over 100 projects across a total of eight countries, as stated on its website.
