A contractor has been selected for the offshore segment of Poland's inaugural Floating Storage and Regasification Unit (FSRU).

Gaz-System, Poland's gas transmission system operator, has chosen the main contractor for the offshore section of the floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU) that will be part of the nation's liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal located in the Gulf of Gdańsk.

The Polish company announced that it has signed a contract with a consortium that includes Gap İnşaat Anasayfa, Unitek İnşaat San, and Fabe Polska. This group will handle the creation of the executive design, supply of machinery and equipment, acquisition of required permits, and construction of the marine component of the FSRU project. Their responsibilities also encompass the launch of Poland’s first FSRU, which is aimed for completion by the first quarter of 2028.

The project involves constructing a berthing and mooring quay equipped with the infrastructure necessary to service the regasification unit, along with a submarine gas pipeline that will link the terminal with Poland’s transmission system.

Sławomir Hinc, President of the Management Board at Gaz-System, explained, "The FSRU program has progressed into the implementation stage across all three segments: offshore, onshore, and the acquisition of a regasification unit." He further noted, "The FSRU terminal is designed to have a capacity of 6.1 billion cubic meters per year, meeting about 30 percent of Poland's current annual gas demand and enhancing the energy supply security for Poland and the Central and Eastern European region."

This announcement follows the granting of a building permit for the offshore part of the FSRU project, obtained in December 2024. The FSRU project is described as the largest investment currently undertaken by the Polish operator.

Construction of the quay in the Gulf of Gdańsk is scheduled to begin with dredging activities planned for the latter half of 2025. Meanwhile, construction of the onshore gas pipelines is reportedly ongoing, consisting of three sections: Kolnik–Gdańsk, Gardeja–Kolnik, and Gustorzyn–Gardeja.

HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has been tasked with the construction of the FSRU at its shipyard in Ulsan, South Korea. Upon completion, the unit will be managed by Mitsui O.S.K. Lines (MOL) under a long-term time charter party (TCP) agreement.

This will mark Poland's second LNG terminal, with the first being the President Lech Kaczyński LNG terminal in Świnoujście, which recently increased its regasification capacity to 8.3 billion cubic meters (bcm) by adding more submerged combustion vaporizer (SCV) regasifiers, constructing a second quay, and building a third tank for LNG process storage.
