RWE and Bedburg are set to construct a 60 MW wind farm in a German mining region.

Energy group RWE AG has partnered with the German town of Bedburg to develop a 60 MW wind farm on restored land at the Garzweiler open-cast mine in North Rhine-Westphalia.

Windpark Bedburg 3 is the third collaboration between RWE and Bedburg, increasing their combined wind power capacity to 156 MW, RWE announced on Monday.

Construction of Windpark Bedburg 3 is set to begin in April. The project will feature nine wind turbines, generating enough electricity for 36,500 homes, with plans for commissioning by the end of 2026.

Both Bedburg and RWE will hold a 50% stake in Windpark Bedburg 3, consistent with the ownership structure of the previous wind farms – Koenigshovener Hoeehe and Bedburg A44n.

As part of the agreement, RWE will contribute EUR 0.002 (USD 0.002) for every kilowatt hour produced to local communities.

Additionally, RWE announced on Monday that it has started building a 13.9 MWp solar facility on the Hambach mine site in North Rhine-Westphalia.
