RES and its partners have received final environmental approval for a 500-MW green hydrogen project in Sweden.

A group led by RES is advancing a 500-MW green hydrogen project in Sweden to the next implementation phase after obtaining final and unappealable environmental permits. The Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Permit for hydrogen production in the Alby PtX project are now legally binding, allowing for full-scale production and the start of permitting for electro aviation fuel (e-SAF), according to a press release.

Located in the Ange municipality, the Alby project aims to produce up to 80,000 tonnes of green hydrogen annually, some of which will be combined with biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) and converted into e-SAF on-site. The project originated with RES, with Prime Capital and Norsk e-Fuel later becoming co-owners and key partners in the SAF production. RES sold the project to a German independent asset manager in December, while Norsk e-Fuel joined in mid-February.

Matilda Afzelius, CEO of RES Nordic, stated, “This final permit signifies the end of RES’ development role and the beginning of a new phase. It’s a critical milestone for our collaboration with Alby PtX owners and our partners, Prime Capital and Norsk e-Fuel. With the permit now legally binding, we can expedite the process of delivering fossil-free fuels to the market.”
