Bulgaria has stopped the sale of nuclear reactors to Ukraine due to worries about energy security.

Bulgaria has halted the sale of nuclear reactors to Ukraine due to energy security issues, as reported by local media on Tuesday.

Deputy Prime Minister Atanas Zafirov, who also leads the Bulgarian Socialist Party, stated that the two reactors at the Belene Nuclear Power Plant will not be sold to Ukraine, according to Sofia News Agency.

He emphasized that the reactors are essential for Bulgaria's energy security and economic autonomy, and that the ruling coalition made this decision collectively.

Zafirov noted that selling the reactors would be a serious error, especially with increasing global energy prices and ongoing instability in the energy sector.

Discussions about selling the two Russian-made VVER-1000 reactors, initially meant for Bulgaria's unfinished Belene Nuclear Power Plant, began in 2023.

In February, Ukraine's parliament approved a plan to acquire reactors for expanding the Khmelnytskyi Nuclear Power Plant.

The sale, which had previously received support from GERB, Bulgaria's largest ruling coalition party, faced strong opposition from the coalition's pro-Russian partner, the Bulgarian Socialist Party.
