Work is currently being done on the local area network in El Dabaa.

The network will ultimately connect all computers, workstations, systems, and sensors at the El Dabaa nuclear power plant in Egypt securely.

Rosatom Automated Control Systems (JSC RASU) announced it has started building this isolated network, adhering to international security standards, which will include firewalls and security systems to safeguard against cyber threats and unauthorized access to sensitive data.

“Centralized network management will allow for quick equipment configuration, software updates, and troubleshooting without halting station operations,” the company stated.

Ilya Litvinov, Director of the Middle East and Africa Projects Department at RASU, remarked: “The project's main goal is to establish a unified distributed data transmission environment ensuring secure information exchange among all network participants—nuclear power plant staff and connected devices. The technical solutions employed meet current data transmission speed and reliability requirements, ensuring stable digital systems operation throughout the plant's lifecycle.”

Construction is ongoing at the four-unit El Dabaa site. The latest update noted the completion of the first stage of concreting for unit 2's inner containment building's second tier.

Over 100 workers participated, pouring 1,200 cubic meters of concrete in a continuous 24-hour process, with a similar amount expected in the second stage.

Alexey Kononenko, Vice President of Atomstroyexport and Director of the El Dabaa construction project, stated that the second unit is nearing a significant milestone for 2025—the completion of the second tier of the containment, scheduled for May of this year, commending the fruitful collaboration with the Egyptian customer and the professionalism of the contractors.

Sherif Helmy, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Nuclear Power Plants Authority of Egypt (NPPA), noted: “This accomplishment reflects the collective efforts of the Egyptian team, represented by NPPA, and the Russian team, represented by JSC Atomstroyexport.”

El Dabaa will be Egypt’s first nuclear power plant and Africa’s first since the Koeberg plant in South Africa nearly 40 years ago. The Rosatom-led project, located about 320 kilometers northwest of Cairo, will consist of four VVER-1200 units, similar to those at Russia's Leningrad and Novovoronezh plants and Belarus's Ostrovets plant.

Under the 2017 agreements, Rosatom will construct the plant and supply Russian nuclear fuel throughout its lifespan, along with a storage facility and containers for used fuel. It will also support Egyptian partners in personnel training and plant maintenance for the initial 10 years of operation.

Construction of the four units is almost concurrent, commencing with unit 1 in July 2022, followed by the others, with unit 4's first concrete expected in January 2024. Egypt aims for 9% of its electricity to come from nuclear by 2030, with the first two units expected to operate commercially by that time, thereby reducing reliance on oil and gas.
