New collaboration to initiate a 1 MW electrolyzer for the hydrogen valley project in Sicily.

Italian firms Duferco Energia and Ansaldo Green Tech have entered a strategic partnership to supply and commission a 1 MW electrolyzer for green hydrogen production as part of the hydrogen valley project in Giammoro, Messina, Sicily.
The electrolyzer, provided by Ansaldo Green Tech, employs anion exchange membrane (AEM) technology, noted for its “high efficiency and operational flexibility.” Developed under the EU-funded Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) initiative – NextGenerationEU – the system is expected to produce over 500 kg of green hydrogen daily, optimizing energy use while achieving 99.9% purity.
The Giammoro hydrogen valley project also involves a 4 MW photovoltaic plant to power the electrolyzer, projected to generate around 100 tons of green hydrogen annually, primarily aiding the decarbonization of key industrial sectors like steelmaking, logistics, and mobility.
With a total investment of €10 million, the hydrogen valley project is anticipated to significantly boost the local economy, create jobs, and propel growth in the green hydrogen production and distribution chain.
Massimo Croci, CEO of Duferco Energia, remarked: “The Hydrogen Valley in Sicily is a tangible step toward energy transition and enhancing the island’s energy independence. This initiative will provide environmental benefits as well as new economic and job opportunities for the region. Environmental sustainability can align with industrial and social progress.”
Vittorio Olcese, CEO of Ansaldo Green Tech, stated: “We are very proud to support the Giammoro Messina Hydrogen Valley project led by Duferco Energia. This agreement is a strong validation of Ansaldo Green Tech’s technology, which emphasizes efficiency and operational flexibility in producing green hydrogen to decarbonize sectors like mobility, logistics, and hard-to-abate industries such as steelmaking.”
This initiative is part of the European decarbonization strategies highlighted in the RePowerEU plan, aimed at reducing reliance on fossil fuels and accelerating the transition to renewable energy.
