Plans for a major hydro project at Loch Ness!

Glen Earrach Energy (GEE) has proposed a 2GW pumped storage hydro project at Loch Ness.

If approved, it will be one of the UK's largest and most efficient energy storage solutions, providing £20 million yearly to Highland communities over its 125-year lifespan, marking the largest community benefit fund in Scotland's history.

Recent polling by Opinium shows strong local support, with 56% of Highlanders in favor and only 16% against the project. Residents value dependable energy, economic benefits, and local investment over the order of project submissions.

GEE's scheme will represent nearly 75% of the planned storage capacity at Loch Ness while using only half the water, producing energy equivalent to around 800 onshore wind turbines and aiming for a 10% reduction in the grid's carbon footprint, with a projected net benefit of £2.9 billion over its first 20 years.

Community feedback led to important design adjustments to minimize visual impact and traffic on the A82, while also preserving views and reducing above-ground infrastructure.

Glen Earrach Director Roderick Macleod stated, “This project is poised to become one of the UK’s largest and most advanced energy storage initiatives. We’ve listened carefully to local views and will keep doing so.” The project is expected to generate its first power by 2030.
