SSE begins construction on a 208-MW wind farm in Scotland.

British utility SSE plc announced on Tuesday that early construction activities have begun at its 208-MW Strathy South Wind Farm in the Scottish Highlands, with plans to complete it by late 2027.

The GBP 400 million (USD 534.5 million/EUR 475.2 million) project will operate under a 15-year contract for difference (CfD) awarded in the UK government’s Allocation Round 5 (AR5). Located in Sutherland, northern Scotland, the site will be next to SSE’s Strathy North Wind Farm and will feature 35 Vestas Wind Systems V162-6.2 MW turbines, marking their first use in the UK.

Once operational, Strathy South will generate enough electricity to power about 200,000 British homes each year. SSE received planning approval for the reworked project in 2021 and made a final investment decision late last year. Originally proposed as a 77-turbine project, it was downsized twice to reduce environmental impact and enhance its investment viability. RJ McLeod has been contracted to oversee the construction.
