EBRD introduces InvestEU in Bulgaria to enhance the green transition.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) announced on Tuesday the launch of its InvestEU programme in Bulgaria to aid the country's shift towards a green and sustainable economy.

The EBRD is providing over 300 million euros ($342.3 million) in new green financing for local businesses through initial guarantee agreements with Eurobank Bulgaria, operating as Postbank, and ProCredit Bank Bulgaria. More local financial institutions are expected to join the programme soon.

The InvestEU guarantees facilitate funding for projects related to energy efficiency, renewable energy development, and clean transport, enabling businesses to reduce costs, manage risks, and grow sustainably. The EBRD InvestEU programme also provides direct support to partner banks and their clients.

Various borrowers, including individuals, homeowners’ associations, and large corporations, can take advantage of the new facility if their projects meet strict technical criteria and contribute to energy savings and carbon emission reductions.

InvestEU is a key EU initiative that promotes strategic investments in sustainable infrastructure, research, innovation, and digitalisation, while also supporting small and medium-sized enterprises and social development. It offers a guarantee mechanism to unlock financing for projects that encourage long-term growth and resilience.

The EBRD acts as a main partner for the InvestEU Programme, utilizing risk-sharing tools for financial institutions in EU countries where it invests. So far, the lender has invested over 4.7 billion euros in more than 300 projects in Bulgaria.

Last week, the EBRD indicated that its investment and policy efforts in Bulgaria until 2030 will concentrate on green transition, competitiveness, and resilience.
