Israel's gas field ceases production following an attack by Iran.

Greek independent Energean has halted production at its Karish gas field off the coast of Israel following a government order linked to Israeli airstrikes on Iran.

On June 13, Energean announced it received a directive from Israel's ministry of energy and infrastructure to temporarily stop all activities on the Energean Power floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) unit, citing "recent geopolitical escalation in the region" as the reason.

The company stated that all production activities are now on hold, with notifications sent to its customers and stakeholders, while emphasizing the safety of its staff as a priority.

Production at Israel's other offshore gas fields, Leviathan and Tamar, may also be affected. Chevron, the operator, refrained from commenting, except to assure that its personnel and facilities are safe. One source indicated that output at Leviathan has been suspended.

Leviathan can produce 1.2 billion cubic feet per day (ft³/d), while Tamar's capacity is 1.1 billion ft³/d, both supplying gas to Egypt, which is facing domestic gas demand challenges.

Energean is in close communication with the ministry and other stakeholders to ensure the safe resumption of Karish production "as soon as possible," though no timeline for restarting operations has been provided.

The shutdown follows significant Israeli airstrikes targeting Iranian military and nuclear sites overnight on June 12-13, marking one of the most serious escalations between the two countries in years. Iran has promised to respond, raising concerns about possible retaliation against Israeli energy infrastructure.

Though Karish is smaller than Leviathan and Tamar, it is still a vital part of Israel's gas supply. Energean has increased output from Karish since its initial gas in late 2022. The FPSO has a production capacity of up to 8 billion cubic meters per year (775 million ft³/d) and provides gas under long-term contracts to Israeli power generators and industrial users.

Energean will provide further updates as they become available.
