Fortum and EDF enhance collaboration on new construction projects.

French energy company EDF has entered into an Early Work Agreement with Finnish utility Fortum as they continue to collaborate on potential new nuclear projects in Finland and Sweden.
"This agreement is a result of two years of teamwork, including joint technical workshops and site visits, under the Framework Contract signed in December 2023," stated Vakis Ramany, EDF's Senior Vice President International Nuclear Development, in a LinkedIn post. "It sets the stage for deeper cooperation and preparatory work, allowing both parties to investigate key technical and commercial aspects of deploying EPR technology in these countries."
Fortum initiated a feasibility study in October 2022 to assess the commercial, technological, and societal requirements for new nuclear energy in both Nordic nations. The study included extensive discussions with various technology vendors, potential partners, customers, and societal stakeholders.
In December 2022, EDF and Fortum announced a Framework Cooperation Agreement to explore collaboration opportunities for developing nuclear reactor projects in Finland and Sweden, covering both large conventional reactors and small modular reactors (SMRs).
In March of this year, Fortum announced that it had chosen two large reactor vendors and one SMR vendor for further discussions following the feasibility study. The company plans to further collaborate with two conventional reactor technology providers - EDF (EPR) and Westinghouse-Hyundai (AP1000) - along with one SMR developer - GE-Hitachi (BWRX-300).
"At EDF, we are dedicated to supporting Fortum's nuclear development strategy in Sweden and Finland, contributing to a secure, sustainable, and low-carbon energy future," Ramany remarked. "EDF teams are fully engaged to apply their expertise and confidently move forward with Fortum into the next phase."
