A new coalition has been formed to advance and utilize the geothermal potential in the UK.

Geothermal UK, a coalition uniting various aspects of the geothermal industry, has been launched to advocate for geothermal energy as a vital component of the UK’s clean energy transition. Founding members include TownRock Energy, Causeway Geothermal, and Eden Geothermal.

The coalition, which consists of developers, supply chain participants, academic experts, and public organizations, aims to consolidate the industry's voice and promote supportive policies and investments to harness the significant untapped potential of geothermal energy in the UK.

Anne Murrell, the coalition's founder, stated, “We’re launching Geothermal UK to enhance awareness of geothermal technologies that provide decarbonized heat, cooling, and power, and to expedite the deployment of this crucial clean energy solution. Geothermal is local, ready to scale, and essential for our net zero future. Countries like France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands are already benefiting from their geothermal resources at scale; it’s time for the UK to catch up.”

The launch comes as the UK sees increasing interest in geothermal energy, with various regional initiatives and mobilization from key supply chain trade bodies like OEUK. Geothermal UK aspires to be the central coordinating voice for supporting implementation, investment, and industry growth.

Dr. Kieran Mullan, MP for Bexhill and Battle and Chairman/Founder of the Deep Geothermal APPG, emphasized the need for the industry to work together to convey to the government the potential benefits of geothermal energy for regional growth, job transition, the environment, and decarbonization.

Stuart Sinclair, CEO of Consortium Drilling, highlighted that collaboration is vital to unlocking geothermal energy's full potential in the UK, enabling the sharing of expertise and reducing project risks.

David Townsend, CEO of TownRock Energy, noted that geothermal energy is crucial for ensuring a just transition in energy jobs, fostering economic growth, and enhancing the UK’s energy security.

Tom Grand, CCO of Eden Geothermal, remarked on the UK geothermal industry's ability to improve energy system efficiency by reducing reliance on electrification, advocating for a coordinated approach to establish a sustainable industry.
