Britain and the Czech Republic will collaborate on small nuclear power plants.

On Monday, Britain and the Czech Republic announced plans to explore small modular nuclear reactors (SMRs), potentially allowing Rolls Royce to export up to six units to the Czech Republic. Last month, Britain committed £2.5 billion to SMR development to boost energy security, meet climate goals, and create jobs and export opportunities. SMRs can be manufactured in factories, with components small enough for truck and barge transport, enabling quicker and cheaper assembly compared to large nuclear plants.
UK Prime Minister Kier Starmer emphasized the benefits for British engineering and industrial strength, stating this collaboration positions the UK to export future technologies. Rolls Royce was chosen last month to construct Britain's initial SMRs, while Great British Energy is anticipated to finalize a contract and site selection later this year, pending regulatory approval.
Czech company CEZ plans to acquire a 20% stake in Rolls Royce’s SMR business and aims to implement up to 3 gigawatts of SMR capacity, enough to power around 6 million homes. Starmer and Czech Prime Minister Peter Fiala will hold a business roundtable during the Czech leader's visit to London to enhance trade and investment ties.
