Google collaborates with Italy's Energy Dome to provide a zero-emission power source.

Italian energy storage company Energy Dome announced on Friday that it has formed a commercial partnership with Google to provide carbon-free energy for the tech giant's operations in the U.S.

Under the agreement, Google has made a strategic investment in Milan-based Energy Dome, which has developed CO2 battery technology aimed at facilitating the energy transition through long-duration storage solutions. Financial details were not disclosed.

Google is joining other investors in Energy Dome, including Oman's sovereign wealth fund and global tank storage operator Vopak.

This marks Google's first commercial deal for long-duration energy storage, part of a broader array of advanced energy technologies needed to achieve its goal of operating on 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030.

Energy Dome's CO2 system stores energy by compressing and liquefying carbon dioxide, which can then be expanded to produce electricity.

This technology avoids using scarce raw materials like lithium and copper, making it appealing to European policymakers focused on reducing dependency on critical minerals and enhancing energy security.

Energy Dome launched its first commercial-scale facility in Sardinia in 2022, aiming for completion by the end of 2024, featuring a 24-hour cycle and a 20-megawatt capacity that can power 13,000 to 15,000 homes.
