Hamburg's network operator intends to convert a gas pipeline for hydrogen use.

Energy network operator Hamburger Energienetze is assessing the viability of a 450-meter natural gas pipeline in Hamburg for hydrogen transport. Known as the Dueker, it is situated near the Kattwyk Bridge, five meters below the Suederelbe riverbed. A specialist company has recently cleaned and inspected its condition and material properties.
If converted, it will contribute to the Hamburg Hydrogen Industry Network (HH-WIN), which aims to establish a 40-km network by 2027, with plans to expand to 60 km by 2032, providing hydrogen to major energy-intensive industrial facilities in Hamburg.
The HH-WIN hydrogen network will connect the Moorburg district to the Elbe island of Hohe Schaar, where industrial companies and a proposed hydrogen import terminal are located. In April, Hamburger Energienetze acquired another former natural gas pipeline for repurposing in Hamburg’s future hydrogen distribution network.
