Montenegro and Italy are set to finish the second undersea power cable project by 2031.

Montenegro anticipates that the setup of a second undersea power cable to Italy will be finished by 2031, according to energy minister Admir Sahmanovic. This will further enhance Montenegro's position in the regional and European energy connectivity market, Sahmanovic mentioned during the Smart Growth, Green Future conference in Tivat this week.

The new project will allow a bi-directional power exchange of 1,200 MW, which will double the existing capacity of 600 MW from the current submarine cable linking the two countries’ power grids. The first cable, laid in late 2019, was constructed by Italy’s Terna and Montenegro’s CGES.

Installation of the second cable is set to begin in 2027 as part of a €500 million ($578 million) initiative, according to previous media reports.

This undersea cable project is crucial for Montenegro's planned electricity market coupling with Italy, aimed at connecting its grid to the single European market. The country hopes to start its digital integration with the European electricity market by late 2026 or early 2027, with full integration expected by late 2036 or early 2037.
