Support for industrial power prices will be implemented in January.

The German economy minister announced on Monday that the government will launch a program to lower electricity prices for manufacturers starting next year, while completing discussions with EU competition authorities.

"We are close to finalizing our negotiations with the European Commission." "I expect the industrial electricity rate to be implemented on January 1, 2026," Katherina Reiche, Minister of Economy and Energy in Berlin, told reporters.

The newspaper Handelsblatt reported that a coalition of think-tanks led by the advisory body DENA estimates the scheme will cost the German government 4.5 billion euros ($5.25 billion) over three years, based on a target industrial electricity price of 5 eurocents per kilowatt-hour.

Reiche mentioned that the EU also supports a separate program to provide financial aid for sectors that heavily rely on purchasing greenhouse gas emission rights.

She added that the EU Commission is giving "positive signs" in favor of extending the program, known as electricity price compensation, well beyond 2030.
