Ofgem is encouraging consumers to request £240 million.

Ofgem and energy providers are encouraging consumers to check if they have unclaimed energy credit balances worth part of £240m from closed accounts. The regulator found that 1.9m accounts are credit, often because customers moved without updating their details. Those who have relocated in the past five years should contact their former suppliers or access old online accounts to see if they can get a refund. While many may only be owed small sums, some could claim over £100.

Tim Jarvis, Director General for Retail at Ofgem, emphasized that it’s understandable to overlook such matters when moving, but those who have moved in the last five years should reach out to their previous providers to verify if they’re owed money. Suppliers must issue a final bill within six weeks and refund in ten working days, but delays occur if contact information is missing. Over 90% of closed account balances are returned automatically, yet millions remain unclaimed. Ed Rees, Energy UK’s Head of Retail Policy, noted that energy bills are challenging for many families, and suppliers are striving to assist customers by ensuring any credits from closed accounts are promptly refunded. It’s crucial to keep contact information current.

Consumers should provide their full name, previous address, account number if available, and contact details when contacting former suppliers. Ofgem’s campaign aims to show that reclaiming these funds not only aids customers during the cost-of-living crisis but also reduces waste in the energy system.
