Ocean Winds' inaugural offshore wind project in Poland has begun construction.

Ocean Winds, a 50-50 partnership between EDP Renewables and ENGIE, has secured approximately EUR 2 billion in project financing and achieved financial close for the 390 MW BC-Wind offshore wind farm in Poland's Baltic Sea Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), thereby advancing the project to the construction phase.

The financing is backed by the European Investment Bank (EIB), which accounts for nearly one-third of the total, along with ICO (Instituto de Crédito Oficial Español) and 13 commercial banks, as stated by the developer on December 1.

Situated about 23 kilometers off the Polish coast, near Krokowa and Choczewo in the Pomeranian Voivodeship, BC-Wind will feature 26 Siemens Gamesa 14 MW wind turbines, enhanced with the Power Boost technology that increases their output to 15 MW.

The wind farm is projected to generate its first power in 2028 and, once fully operational, is anticipated to supply electricity to nearly 500,000 Polish households, according to Ocean Winds.

Onshore construction for the BC-Wind project is set to commence in 2026, focusing on the design and construction of the onshore substation and the export cable route, which will be undertaken by Polish company P&Q. Electricity will be transmitted to the onshore substation through cables designed and installed by Tele-Fonika Kable (TFK), located in Bydgoszcz.

The developer indicates that this project will be the first in Poland to be completely managed from Polish ports, with Świnoujście designated as the marshalling harbor for foundations and Gdańsk for the wind turbines.
