RWE has reached a final investment decision on the 350MW Pembroke battery.

RWE has finalized its investment decision regarding the 350MW Pembroke battery storage project located in South Wales.

The company announced that the approximately £200 million project will be part of the Pembroke Net Zero Centre and was revealed by the First Minister of Wales during the Wales Investment Summit.

RWE stated that planning permission was obtained in January and that the project secured capacity in the latest UK Capacity Market auction. Construction is set to commence in the first half of 2026, with commissioning anticipated in the latter half of 2028, pending an updated grid connection.

The two-hour storage system will be situated on a 5.1-hectare site south of Pembroke Power Station and will utilize 212 lithium-ion battery containers to provide 700MWh of storage capacity.

Additionally, the project will incorporate biodiversity initiatives, including meadow planting, native woodland and scrub planting, as well as a new pond to enhance local wildlife habitats.

Nikolaus Valerius, CEO of RWE Generation SE, remarked, “In an evolving energy landscape with increasing renewable sources, there is a rising demand for established technologies that can promptly assist the electricity grid. Battery storage systems are perfect for this due to their speed, efficiency, and competitiveness. Our Pembroke Battery represents our leading storage project in the UK and will significantly aid in stabilizing the UK energy market by effectively storing excess energy and supplying it to the national grid as needed.”

Eluned Morgan, First Minister for Wales, commented: "This major investment from RWE highlights Wales' pivotal role in the UK's shift towards clean and renewable energy. The Pembroke Battery Storage facility will help advance our goals for a cleaner, more reliable energy future while simultaneously generating good jobs and benefiting local communities throughout South Wales.”

Tom Glover, RWE UK country chair, stated: “Wales possesses considerable potential to spearhead the UK’s transition to clean energy across various sectors like wind, solar, storage, hydro, and emerging technologies. In spite of the challenges facing energy projects nationwide, we recognize a government committed to seizing this opportunity for the benefit of communities throughout Wales—something we wholeheartedly endorse.”
