GIGA and Vattenfall have signed a battery energy storage tolling agreement in the Netherlands.

GIGA Storage and Vattenfall have established a battery energy storage tolling agreement for Project Leopard in northern Netherlands.
Starting on January 1, 2028, this agreement allows Vattenfall to optimize 100MW of the 300MW total capacity of the Project Leopard battery energy storage system (BESS) for grid stability, energy trading, and portfolio management.
The company will also have access to 400MWh of storage within the BESS.
The tolling contract is crucial to GIGA Storage’s strategy for launching Project Leopard, ensuring stable and long-term revenue. This arrangement is aimed at enhancing the project’s financial sustainability.
The collaboration utilizes GIGA Storage’s expertise in developing, constructing, and operating large-scale battery systems, along with Vattenfall’s experience in market solutions and BESS optimization.
Having a storage capacity of 1,200MWh, Project Leopard achieved financial closure in May 2025 and is currently under construction.
It is the first project in the Netherlands to initiate and sign a transmission-driven transport limitation agreement with TenneT.
Earlier in 2025, Vattenfall secured contracts for 50MW and 55MW in the Netherlands and Germany, respectively.
GIGA Storage CEO Kevin Dijkers stated: “This agreement with Vattenfall highlights the strategic significance of utility-scale storage in tackling current grid challenges.
“Leopard will be instrumental in alleviating congestion on the TenneT network while facilitating the integration of renewable energy. We are pleased to partner with Vattenfall, one of Europe’s leading energy companies, on this project.”
