Ocean Winds completes $2.31 billion funding for Polish offshore project.

Ocean Winds has secured around €2 billion ($2.31 billion) in project financing and finalized funding for its first offshore wind farm, BC-Wind, located in the Baltic Sea.

This development marks the progression of the 390MW offshore wind project into the construction stage.

Ocean Winds is a joint venture between EDP Renewables and Engie, with equal ownership.

BC-Wind is positioned in Poland's exclusive economic zone in the Baltic Sea, approximately 23km from the coast near Krokowa and Choczewo, in the Pomeranian Voivodeship.

The wind farm will feature 26 turbines, each rated at 14MW, with a power enhancement capability of up to 15MW, totaling a capacity of 390MW.

The financing is supported by the European Investment Bank (EIB), contributing nearly one-third of the total funds, along with Instituto de Crédito Oficial Español and 13 commercial banks.

The first power delivery from the BC-Wind project is expected in 2028, and once operational, it aims to provide zero-emission energy to about 500,000 households in Poland.

Construction onshore is scheduled to start in 2026, with P&Q, a Polish firm, tasked with designing and constructing the onshore substation and the export cable route.

Tele-Fonika Kable, located in Bydgoszcz, Poland, will oversee the design and installation of cables that will link the wind farm to the onshore substation.

Ocean Winds will also set up a service base in Władysławowo. This project is noted as the first in Poland to be entirely managed from local ports, with Świnoujście handling foundation assembly and Gdańsk managing the wind turbines.

All required environmental and regulatory approvals have been secured for the project, including permits for its offshore and onshore elements and integration with the National Power System.

Ocean Winds COO Bautista Rodriguez stated: “In Poland, offshore wind energy is a vital element of the country’s energy transition and offers a genuine opportunity for rejuvenating the economic sector.

“At Ocean Winds, we believe Poland can emerge as a regional leader in offshore wind, both in clean energy production and industrial capacity.

“With robust financial partners like the EIB, our BC-Wind project represents our commitment to this strategic endeavor and advances the integration of renewables into the energy framework.”

Last month, Ocean Winds received approval to develop a floating offshore wind project in the Celtic Sea, which is a significant advancement for the UK's wind sector.
