Iberdrola launches a 65-MWp solar power plant for Salzgitter in Germany.

Iberdrola SA of Spain has launched a 65-MWp solar facility in Germany to provide electricity to steel producer Salzgitter AG under a long-term power purchase agreement (PPA), the utility announced on Wednesday.

Situated in Schadewohl in Saxony-Anhalt, the new plant is projected to produce approximately 60 GWh of electricity annually, sufficient to power over 20,000 homes, and to mitigate around 23,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions each year. Salzgitter will utilize all of this energy for producing green steel, according to Iberdrola.

The initiative is supported by a 15-year PPA between the two firms that ensures the delivery of 900 GWh of electricity throughout the agreement's duration. Previously, the German steelmaker had secured wind energy from a segment of Iberdrola’s Baltic Eagle offshore wind project located in German waters.
