Italy plans to invest 1 billion euros to reduce energy costs.

The Italian government intends to allocate approximately 1 billion euros ($1.16 billion) to reduce energy costs for households and businesses, Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni announced on Friday, as part of initiatives aimed at stimulating economic growth.

During her customary New Year's press conference, Meloni emphasized her commitment to growth and security while presenting her policy agenda for 2026.

"This government has invested several billion to keep energy prices manageable. The most recent decree was issued six months ago, amounting to around three billion euros, and we are currently preparing another one to allocate an additional billion in the coming weeks," Meloni noted.

The prime minister also remarked that the statistics agency ISTAT was underreporting Italy's economic growth, expressing her belief that there would be an upward adjustment of GDP figures for 2024 and 2025.

In September, ISTAT had notably revised the growth estimate for 2023 up to 1.0% from an earlier figure of 0.7%.

"I believe a similar revision could occur for the 2024 and 2025 figures," Meloni stated.
