China’s Sungrow Power Supply Co Ltd intends to establish a 55-MW/220-MWh standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) in eastern Spain and is in the process of obtaining the necessary permits, according to public records.
The company has received environmental approval and has now requested consent, a construction license, and a declaration of public utility, which allows the project to acquire the essential land and rights-of-way under Spanish law. The application is available for public review online.
This initiative, named BESS Cuevas, is situated in the La Vall d’Uixo municipality of Castellon. Sungrow is focusing on land owned by the La Vall d’Uixo town hall, a private individual, and Iberdrola’s power distribution division for the required easements.
The Chinese solar PV inverter and battery storage firm plans to utilize its own equipment for the construction of BESS Cuevas. The lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery setup will feature 11 Sungrow transformer stations and 44 Sungrow ST5015UX battery containers.
The total estimated cost of the project is EUR 39.2 million (USD 46.1 million).
