Vestas will provide turbines for the Vanguard West offshore wind project.

Vestas has finalized a contract to provide turbines for RWE’s 1.38GW Vanguard West offshore wind initiative in the UK.

As part of the deal, Vestas will supply and install 92 turbines, each with a capacity of 15MW and a rotor diameter of 236m, located about 47km from the coast of Norfolk in East Anglia.

RWE, in collaboration with investment firm KKR, aims to make a final investment decision by the summer of 2026, with the goal of operationalizing the project in 2029.

Additionally, Vestas will manage the turbines through a five-year comprehensive service agreement, followed by a long-term operational support contract.

Upon completion, Vanguard West is expected to generate enough electricity to power approximately 1.5 million homes in the UK each year.

The electricity produced will be transmitted to the onshore grid using specially designed export cable infrastructure.

Nils de Baar, president of Vestas Northern & Central Europe and Global Offshore, stated, “The push for offshore wind energy in Europe is accelerating with the UK Government enhancing its commitment in AR7 and projects like Norfolk Vanguard West advancing. This collaboration between industry and government sends a strong message about the UK’s resolve to advance its renewable energy goals.

“We are excited to work with RWE on the Norfolk Vanguard West project. This initiative enhances the UK’s long-term energy security and helps consumers with lower energy prices.”

This announcement follows RWE's successful contract for difference secured during Allocation Round 7.

Sven Utermöhlen, CEO of RWE Offshore Wind, mentioned, “After RWE’s achievements in Allocation Round 7 and our partnership with KKR, this turbine supply agreement is a significant milestone in bringing the Vanguard West project to fruition.

“With RWE’s extensive offshore experience, we are thrilled to partner with Vestas, who have substantial expertise in turbine manufacturing and delivery.”

Recently, Vestas was chosen to supply and install turbines for the 26MW Kapuni Wind Farm in Taranaki, New Zealand, a project aimed at linking renewable electricity generation with green hydrogen production.
