Solar power in Germany reaches 106 GW by 2025, with China leading in photovoltaic imports.

Germany's total solar power capacity reached 106.2 GW by the end of 2025, with China becoming the largest supplier of photovoltaic (PV) equipment due to a decline in local production.

By late 2025, approximately 4.8 million PV systems were installed on rooftops and properties, according to a report from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis) released on Thursday.

These figures indicate a yearly increase of 17.6% in the number of solar installations, with installed capacity growing by 11.8%. However, the growth rate has decreased compared to previous years, where the number of systems grew by 27.7% in 2024 and 27.3% in 2023.

The statistics encompass all PV systems connected to public supply networks and equipped with a meter, excluding smaller systems like balcony power plants.

Data revealed that the value of PV system imports reached EUR 1.8 billion in 2025, a 7.8% decrease. Of these imports, 88% originated from China, with the Netherlands following at 5.2%.

In contrast, the value of exports dropped by 30.1% to EUR 358 million, primarily to European countries. Exports included 15.9% to Italy, 14.8% to Austria, and 7.2% to Switzerland.

Germany produced 509,200 solar units in the first three quarters of 2025, reflecting a 60.6% decline year-on-year. This downward trend has persisted for several years, with domestic production falling from nearly 3.5 million solar modules in 2023 to 1.5 million in 2024.
