TotalEnergies aims to begin phase two production at Azerbaijan's Absheron gas field in 2029.

TotalEnergies, the operator of the Absheron gas-condensate field in Azerbaijan's section of the Caspian Sea, announced on Monday that it plans to commence production from the second phase of the project on September 1, 2029. A final investment decision regarding the project is anticipated in July of this year.

The Absheron field is situated approximately 100 kilometers (62 miles) southeast of Baku. Production from the first development phase, aimed at generating around 4.2 million cubic meters of gas daily and about 12,800 barrels of condensate, started in July 2023. During the peak output of the second phase, daily gas production is projected to reach about 12.7 million cubic meters, while condensate production could rise to roughly 35,000 barrels per day.

Discovered in 1960, the Absheron field is estimated to hold around 350 billion cubic meters of gas, making it the second-largest gas field in the Caspian Sea, following the Shah Deniz gas field. The development agreement for the field was established in 2009 between TotalEnergies and SOCAR, each holding a 35% share in the project, while the remaining 30% is owned by the Abu Dhabi National Oil Company, which joined the consortium in August 2025.
