Germany plans to auction an additional 12GW of onshore wind capacity.

Germany will offer an additional 12GW of onshore wind energy as part of its Climate Action Programme 2026.

The federal government indicated that these phased tenders will relate to approximately 2000 wind turbines, generating electricity comparable to 15-20 gas-fired power plants.

It further stated that the added wind capacity is expected to decrease the consumption of natural gas and coal by 2030, while preventing the release of 6.5 million tonnes of CO2 emissions.

According to the government, this initiative could result in savings of around €1 billion annually on natural gas imports, based on last year's average wholesale prices.

It also mentioned that the additional 12GW of onshore wind by 2030 is projected to reduce wholesale electricity prices by 0.6 cents per kilowatt-hour.

The programme includes 67 initiatives aimed at cutting down over 25 million tonnes of CO2 by 2030 and minimizing reliance on fossil fuel imports.

Federal environment minister Carsten Schneider remarked: “This program will provide a new impetus for climate protection, reducing our dependence on costly and uncertain oil and gas imports.

"We are modernizing the economy, increasing society’s resilience to crises, and assisting nature in supporting us.”

The government announced that a total of €8 billion will be allocated over the next four years to back these initiatives.

Additionally, Germany aims to achieve 115GW of installed onshore wind capacity by 2030.
