Spain's Acciona Energia announced on Thursday that it has entered into bilateral agreements to provide 800 GWh of renewable electricity to energy-intensive industrial customers in Italy, as part of the country's Energy Release 2.0 initiative.
The agreements, which include steel producer Acciaierie Venete among the buyers, aim to aid the decarbonization of heavy industry by offering access to clean energy at stable rates.
Through this system, overseen by the state-run energy agency Gestore dei Servizi Energetici (GSE), industrial consumers can obtain renewable energy for three years at a fixed price of EUR 65 (USD 76.58) per MWh. In return, developers like Acciona Energia pledge to create new renewable generation capacity in Italy, backed by long-term fixed tariffs lasting 20 years.
Acciona Energia has not disclosed the specific projects planned for the new clients.
The renewable energy-focused company currently manages 156 MW of wind capacity in Italy across four wind farms in Abruzzo, Calabria, and Sicily. Additionally, it intends to construct two solar photovoltaic plants in Sicily—the 100.8-MWp Panbianco project and the 50.2-MWp Benante facility—after acquiring 151 MWp of capacity in Italy’s recent FER X renewables auction.
