Romania's energy production decreased by 2.1% year-on-year in the first two months of 2026, resulting in a total of 2.689 million tonnes of oil equivalent (TOE), according to provisional data released by the statistical office on Friday.
The total energy resources in Romania, including imports, were 5.275 million TOE from January to February, reflecting a slight decline of 1.2% compared to the previous year. Imports constituted 49% of the total resources, or 2.586 million TOE, which was a decrease of 0.2% year-on-year.
During this period, Romania's combined electricity generation and imports reached 12.139 TWh, marking a 2.8% increase from the previous year. Domestic electricity production rose by 9.3% to 9.545 TWh. The breakdown of the total output showed that thermal power contributed 36.5%, hydropower 26.2%, nuclear power 19.7%, with wind and solar power accounting for 14.3% and 3.4%, respectively.
Thermal power plants produced approximately 3.485 TWh of electricity during the first two months, which was a 6.5% decrease from the previous year.
However, hydropower output saw a significant increase of 46.8% year-on-year, reaching 2.497 TWh.
Electricity generation at Cernavoda, Romania's only nuclear plant, declined by 3.2% to 1.879 TWh in January-February compared to the same period last year.
Wind farms generated around 1.361 TWh, an increase of 34.8% year-on-year, while solar plants produced 323.2 GWh, showing a decrease of 10.1%.
Final electricity consumption slightly dipped by 0.8% year-on-year to 8.783 TWh during this period. Technological consumption in power plants saw a 23.8% increase, totaling 1.233 GWh.
Romania's electricity exports rose by 7.9% year-on-year to 2.123 TWh in the first two months of 2026, while imports fell by 15.7% to 2.593 TWh.
In terms of fossil fuels, Romania produced 379,700 TOE of crude oil, reflecting an 8.6% decrease year-on-year, and 244,400 TOE of coal, down 26.1%. Natural gas production also fell by 1.2% year-on-year, amounting to 1.244 million TOE.
In 2025, Romania's total energy production fell by 2.3% to 16.527 million TOE. TOE represents the estimated energy produced by burning one metric tonne of crude oil.
