Slovakia plans to initiate a lawsuit in the next few days to contest the European Union's decision to prohibit Russian gas imports, which was made by a qualified majority, as stated by Prime Minister Robert Fico on Friday.
The lawsuit will be presented to the EU's Court of Justice, with Fico criticizing the method of approval for the regulation. The ban on Russian gas imports, set to take effect by late 2027, was approved by a reinforced majority of nations, allowing the EU to move past objections from Slovakia and Hungary earlier this year.
Fico remarked that the Slovak government views this as a significant breach of the principles underlying EU treaties, asserting that decisions regarding sanctions and foreign policy should require unanimous agreement. Hungary has already lodged a lawsuit against the ban, and Slovakia had previously indicated its intention to follow suit. Fico mentioned that the government aims to file its lawsuit by the April 27 deadline.
Both Slovakia and Hungary have continued to receive Russian gas supplies, despite the EU's attempts to reduce the bloc's dependency on Russian energy and diminish funding for Moscow's war in Ukraine.
