French utility Engie is in discussions with the Trump administration about a potential reimbursement for its offshore wind project leases in the U.S., following the president's stance against such technology, according to CEO Catherine MacGregor on Tuesday.
Engie has halted three offshore wind projects currently in development and has reported impairments for its joint venture Ocean Winds since Trump took office again last year.
MacGregor stated, "We'll see about these terms; an agreement is possible depending on the discussions," during a press breakfast. French oil giant TotalEnergies has already shifted nearly $1 billion (850 million euros) from offshore wind leases to U.S. oil and natural gas ventures.
Trump has expressed that he views wind turbines as unattractive, expensive, and inefficient, and his administration has taken steps to boost domestic fossil fuel production.
"I strongly believe in offshore wind power, both economically and in terms of public support. However, proper project planning and involvement of fishermen are essential," MacGregor noted.
Despite this, she pointed out that advancing offshore wind energy in the U.S. will continue to be difficult due to a lack of clear policy frameworks.
"New offshore wind projects are going to be complicated regardless of the administration," she added.
